Laos: Rambo Feet

Many years ago -- back in 1991, to be exact -- I wound up alone in Vientiane, Laos, waiting for a visa to Cambodia.

The way this happened is outlined at length in Farther than Wisconsin, in the Cambodia section of this site. Part Three of that article describes my time in Laos.

From that brief time in Vientiane, one memory stands out. One evening I went for a walk, and struck up a conversation with a young monk. At one point I happened to glance down at his feet. He was wearing a pair of leather sandals with "RAMBO" embossed on the band that stretched over the top of his feet.

To this day, that is the very first thing I think of when someone mentions Laos: A monk in a saffron robe and Rambo sandals.

Someday, I want to return to Laos. Until then, I have only a few dim memories, and a few mediocre photos.
